Sharing stories and reflections from the field

In October 2025, the REACH network came together to discuss A Field Researcher’s “Guide” to Field Research, a slow-brewing experiment at Quicksand’s Bangalore studio centred on collective reflection. It is not a manual of best practices but a living collection of stories that reveal our many realities of being in the field.

Fieldwork rarely goes as planned. The quick decisions we make, the pivots when things shift, and the instincts we rely on often get lost in the rush of projects. This Guide creates space to revisit those moments, to share, listen, and reflect together.

Within REACH, people come from different disciplines and contexts, each bringing a unique way of seeing. When these perspectives meet, they open up rich opportunities to learn from one another. What emerges through these exchanges becomes less about instruction and more about insight — a reminder that our stories themselves can be our teachers.

These conversations are energising. They capture and reflect on shared experiences, drawing out the emotions and nuances that shape how research is done. They surface forgotten memories, spark new connections, and invite a deeper understanding of who we are as researchers.
