Stby

Amsterdam & London

Stby (standby) is a pioneer in discovery and foundational research, committed to driving meaningful change. We are dedicated to creating more human, fair, and sustainable ways of living, working, and doing business.

Founded in 2002 by Geke van Dijk and Bas Raijmakers, Stby has studios in both London and Amsterdam. Over the years, we’ve collaborated with a wide array of clients, including Philips, Spotify, Google, YouTube, Intel, KLM, Adidas, Cisco, eBay, IKEA, Sony, British Council, Design Council, NHS, ILO, and What Design Can Do. In 2008, we co-founded the Reach Network for Global Design Research to address international research needs. This global partnership allows us to offer services and expertise on a worldwide scale.

We bring a diverse range of research expertise, including deep-dive ethnography, co-creation labs, blended research, global exploration, strategic pilots, and training and coaching. By building on proven methodologies and introducing innovative approaches, we tailor each project to address specific topics and meet the unique needs of our clients. Over the years, we’ve developed signature methods like Design Documentaries and Street Labs, which remain core components of our work.

For two decades, we’ve conducted foundational research to inspire and guide impactful change. Our work spans a variety of themes, including future society, sustainable development, agile collaboration, intelligent systems, international reach, and embedded innovation.

We partner with a wide range of clients, from international corporations to public sector organisations and NGOs. Specialising in strategic and creative research projects, we work closely with stakeholders to bring real people and their experiences to the forefront of service innovation and complex transitions.
